Tom Jones Biography
Born on February 17, 1928, in Littlefield, Texas, Tom Jones’ educational journey led him to the University of Texas at Austin. Following his service in the Korean War, he relocated to New York, embarking on a theatre career that commenced with his involvement in the creation of revues produced by the impresario Julius Monk.
Collaborating with John Donald Robb, Jones contributed to “Joy Comes to Deadhorse,” a Western-themed musical loosely inspired by Edmond Rostand’s 1894 play, “Les Romanesques.” While engaged in various creative endeavours, Jones gained particular renown for his role in crafting the script and lyrics for the enduring musical “The Fantasticks.” This production achieved an unprecedented feat, enjoying an uninterrupted run spanning more than four decades, thus securing its place as the lengthiest-running musical in American theatrical history.
Sustaining its presence at Sullivan Street, “The Fantasticks” dazzled audiences with over 17,000 performances until 2002. A revival of the beloved musical emerged in 2006, captivating audiences for an additional 4,300 performances until 2017.
Beyond his association with “The Fantasticks,” Jones also collaborated alongside Schmidt on two other notable productions: “I Do! I Do!” and “110 in the Shade.” This partnership bore fruit with the 1963 Broadway opening of “110 in the Shade,” which achieved a commendable run of 330 performances. Jones’s contributions garnered recognition, with Tony nominations gracing “I Do! I Do!” and “110 in the Shade,” while the Drama Desk Vernon Rice Award honoured his exceptional work on “The Fantasticks” in 1961.
Regrettably, the luminary lyricist and librettist responsible for the enduring legacy of “The Fantasticks” has passed away. Tom Jones breathed his last on Friday, August 11, 2023, at his residence in Sharon, Connecticut. At the age of 95, he succumbed to cancer, as confirmed by his son.
