An anonymous letter led to the arrest of a hit-and-run driver who allegedly killed a university sophomore two years ago.

On Tuesday Police arrested Tammy Blankenship Harlan, 50, from Waco in connection with the 2016 death of Baylor University student David Grotberg, 19.

Waco police detectives arrested Harlan before 11 am on Tuesday and transported her to McLennan County Jail on a second-degree felony charge of failure to stop and render aid after the crash.

Grotberg was knocked down on the night of October 6, 2016 in the 3200 block of Franklin Avenue and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

His girlfriend was riding alongside him but she was not injured, police said.

Witnesses reported that an SUV was driving 'very fast and did not stop after striking Grotberg,'  an affidavit seen by the Waco Tribune states.

Police claimed that they received an anonymous letter in September 2018 attributing the hit-and-run to Harlan, which alleged she was drinking and speeding when she struck Grotberg.

An informant followed the SUV the next day to Marlin, where the suspect left the car until it was repaired, the Waco Tribune reported.

Waco police Sergeant W. Patrick Swanton said: 'The tenacity of our detectives is pretty incredible to witness.

'When you get a case such as this, where a young man needlessly died, those cases never end for the detective.

Detectives asked for a search warrant for Harlan’s phone which showed she had filed an insurance claim for her car on October 29, 2016.

She said the damage was done after she hit a stop sign on University Parks Drive the previous day.

Harlan was interviewed by detectives later that October. She had told them she had hit a sign after attending a get-together where she was drinking wine.
